Mrs. Mary Florene “Flo” Roper Barnett was born on November 10, 1925 to Mary Beatrice and Henry Hess Roper in Hansford Country, Gruver, TX. They lived on a self-sustaining farm during the great depression years, and following. She was the fourth of five children in the family. She was the baby of the family until her younger sister was born, eighteen years after.
During high school and afterward, Flo worked as a telephone operator. She met and married Otho Earl Gammill. They had four children: Rae Olene, Carolyn Bea (“K”/”Katie”), O.E. and William Henry. She was a devoted mother to her kids and a very successful business woman owning and operating her own beauty shop, which she did for about thirty years until she retired.
After her retirement, Flo was married briefly but suddenly widowed by her second husband, Orveda Chusum. Subsequently, she met and married M.C “Joe” Barnett on Jan. 17, 1980 in Stinnett, TX. They were both very active in the First Christian Church of Stinnett. They were married for thirty-four years, during which time they moved from Stinnett to Amarillo in 2008. Flo passed away on Monday, March 25, 2019 in the presence of her loving family by her side.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Beatrice and Henry Hess Roper, and her siblings, Irene (her older sister), Harland (WWII Ranger/Army Hero), Emory Dee (next oldest brother), and Harlene (the baby).
Flo is survived by her two children, Carolyn (“K”/”Katie”) Robinson and husband Joe of Bushland, and O.E Gammill; and abundance of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be at 11 am Saturday, Hillside Christian Church Northwest Campus, 600 Tascosa Rd. Arrangements are under the guidance of Lighthouse Funeral and Cremation Services
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations can be made to either Accolade Hospice of Amarillo, or the Stephen Ministries of First Christian Church of Amarillo, or Hillside Christian Church.
