Mattie Lee Van Huss Altman, of Amarillo, passed away on December 05, 2018.
A celebration of her life will be at 2:00 pm Monday, December 17 at Hillside Christian Church Northwest Campus, 600 Tascosa Rd. Arrangements are under the guidance of Lighthouse Funeral and Cremation Services.
Mattie was born on September 2, 1937 in Milburn, OK. She moved to Amarillo in 1947, and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1956. She married Donald W. Altman on March 30, 1957, and had 3 children, Daryl, Dennis, and Douglas.
Mattie worked briefly for the Amarillo Police Department, and the Helium Plant prior to beginning her career at Pantex in 1960. She retired from there in 1999. She was a lifetime member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, International Alpha Beta Chapter. Over the years, Mattie served as Chapter and District President, as well as serving on the Texas State Council. She attended many state and national ESA conventions, and actively supported many of their projects such as St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital and Special Olympics.
Mattie was very devoted to her family, and was considered “Mom” to many neighborhood children and co-workers. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel C. and Helen Trapp Van Huss; and by a son, Dennis Warren Altman.
Her surviving relatives include her husband, Donald Wayne Altman; sons, Daryl W. Altman and wife Donna, and Douglas Altman and wife Tiffany all of Amarillo; a sister, Margret Stephens of Woodbridge, VA; 3 granddaughters, Danette Fisher, Kimberly Johnson, and Bailey Reynolds; 5 great grandsons, and 3 great granddaughters.
Honorary Pallbearers will be her great grandsons, Zachary Castillo, Hudson Fisher, Teigan High, and Cooper Johnson.
The family will receive friends at Don and Mattie’s home following the service.
