Guillermo Martinez, better known as “Bill”, age 81, passed away on October 1, 2023, with his wife Mary Ann at his side in Amarillo Texas.
Bill was born on May 28, 1942, in Taos, New Mexico to his parents Juan Contreras and Olivama Martinez.
Bill can aptly be described as a strong, easy-going man with a gentle heart and powerful soul, a spiritual man who was kind and giving, funny, and filled with integrity. Bill was so generous and accepting. His motto was “don’t worry about anything.”
Bill retired as a surveyor for the state of New Mexico after 22 years of service. After retirement from the state, he worked for approximately 20 years for the City of Tucumcari in Planning and Development and as a Safety Officer. In addition, Bill was a member of the New Mexico Army National Guard, serving for 24 years, and retired with the rank of Sargeant.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents Juan Contreras and Olivama Martinez, aunts Tive Martinez of Tucumcari, New Mexico, and Perlina Hirschseld of California, Uncle Joe Martinez of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and niece Debbie Latina of California. He is also preceded by brother-in-law Pete Jimenez of Tucumcari, New Mexico as well as other family members.
Bill is survived by his wife Mary Ann of 55 years, nephews Bobbie (Yamira) Hirschseld and Kenny Hirschseld of California, niece Charlene Smith (John) of North Carolina, in addition to numerous other nieces and nephews residing in California, North Carolina, and Colorado. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Richard Jimenez (Daisy) of Roswell, New Mexico, and sisters-in-law Judy Aragon (Charlie) of Tucumcari, New Mexico, and Maxine Daggett (Jeff) of Chama, New Mexico.
In addition, Bill was also known as Pampo to his nieces Anna Daggett of Chama, New Mexico and Judy Daggett of Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was known as Uncle Willie to nephew Charlie Aragon jr., and nieces Tana Aragon and Francine Jiminez. All his nieces and nephews held a special place in his heart.
Services are being held on October 7, 2023, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Tucumcari, New Mexico. A Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m.
Bill will be laid to rest at the Tucumcari Memorial Cemetery. The family of Mary Ann Martinez has entrusted the care of their loved one to Lighthouse Funeral and Cremation Services in Amarillo Texas.
