Barbara Janice Mitchell, 90, of Amarillo, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, with her loved ones at her side. She was born on March 4, 1935, in Turkey, Texas to George and Tiny Martille (Allen) Gabbert.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Temple Baptist Church, 3208 S. Van Buren St. Arrangements are under the care of Lighthouse Funeral Home.
She was a cheerleader and twirler in high school. Barbara married the love of her life, Jack Mitchell in March 1955. She was always a loving, kindhearted, and caring person who always put other’s needs ahead of her own. Through all of her health issues, Barbara never complained and always had a smile on her face. She was a very talented person who could paint and make any kind of craft. Barbara didn’t have green thumbs; she had green hands because she could grow anything! She won awards at the Tri-State Fair for her vegetables, but flowers were her passion.
She worked at Berkley Pump Company in the office for many years. Also, she worked at the Panhandle Council for the deaf where she met and loved on many of the deaf community. Barbara was a member of Beta Sigma Pi where she served as President, Secretary, and was named Sweetheart of the Year.
The Dallas Cowboys had no bigger fan than Barbara. She had records of their wins and losses for many, many years.
Her church family was precious to her. She loved Temple Baptist Church, and she loved the congregation very much. She was also a volunteer at Northwest Texas Hospital Auxiliary where she brought smiles to many people.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Angela Williams; sister, LaDonna Coleman; brother, Barry Gabbert; her parents, George and Tiny Gabbert, and a daughter-in-law, Lori Mitchell.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, E.T. “Jack” Mitchell of Amarillo; daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi Head and husband Billy; son, Mike Mitchell; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; a brother, Derwood Gabbert of Conroe, Texas, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Barbara will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She truly was one of a kind.
Remembering sweet Barbara was always to everyone at church.For about the last year or so we gave one another a hug and compared managing a Walker!⭐️🥰. İ always loved speaking of Jack and Barbara with fondness as they were the second couple named Jack and Barbara in my life , good friends! What a wonderful, happy ,smiling Woman She was , every Sunday,as She made Her way up the Church Isle after getting out of Sunday School , She greeted Everyone She could,including Me , with a warm friendly,how are You handshake , We will miss Her sweet face in Church , God Bless You Jack and Family.
