Dennis Dean Proffitt, 75, Amarillo, Texas, passed away on June 26, 2025, after a lengthy and frustrating battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born on November 26, 1949, to Bill and Naomi Proffitt, Dennis was an unforgettable presence in the lives of all who knew him.
He was a quiet man who was much like a hermit living on the outskirts of town. He loved going to the movies, getting practice in at the shooting range, and watching old westerns. He was a winner of awards in gun competitions. He loved to fish on Lake Houston and hunt after his retirement from truck driving. He enjoyed sitting on his back deck and watching nature and the deer that came to the deer feeder.
Thank you to the staff, nurses and hospice staff at Thomas E. Creek Veteran Continued Living Care “B” in Amarillo, Texas for their loving care and genuine concern for his well-being, especially in the last weeks of his life.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Naomi Proffitt. He is survived by his sister, Judy Culver (Kelley) and two nephews, Michael Culver and Jason Culver and many cousins.
Interment will be in the National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina at a later date.
I served with Dennis in the Marine Corps at Cherry Point, North Carolina. He was a generous and funny man who would do anything for his friends. We stayed in touch much too infrequently, and I will miss him. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
