Denzil “Hoss” Douglas Hook, Sr.

Denzil Douglas Hook, Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 22, 2023, at the age of 86. Known to many as Hoss, he was a beloved husband, dad, brother, uncle, Papa and friend.  Hoss was born on March 29, 1937, in Dickens, Texas to Andrew and Mary Hook.
The Hook family lived in various places throughout Hoss’ childhood. They were a farming family and spent many hours picking cotton-to which he would tell you that he worked the fastest and the hardest. Hoss attended school in Quail, Texas. He worked in the oilfield from the age of 15 until retiring at the age of 62.
Hoss was an avid fisherman and hunter. When it came to fishing, he’d always say that it was “the first, the most and the biggest” that counted, and you can bet he was all 3 of those often! He was a master carpenter and could often be found in his shop creating and crafting everything from tables to chairs to swings.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sheila; two brothers and three sisters.
Hoss is survived by his wife Loretta, whom he married in July of 1990. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Jo Biddle; his son Lil’ Hoss Hook and wife Teresa; his daughters Mary Mayes and husband Gary, Sarah Ewing, and Lisa Savage and husband Justin.
Hoss was “Papa” to many, including 16 grandchildren and multiple great and great-great-grandchildren.

Hoss was the kindest, generous and most known person I’ve ever known. He welcomed me into the family from day one. He was loved and will be missed.
