Hogan Hickman

Ronald “Hogan” Zane Hickman entered eternal life on Tuesday, October 2nd, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on July 31st, 1950, Hogan lived a vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, wittiness, and cherished memories.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 11th, 2024, at Lighthouse Funeral and Cremation Services, 3707 Wolflin Ave, Amarillo, TX 79102.

Hogan was born to Richard “Glen” Hickman and Helen Bernice Hickman in Fulton, Missouri. He later moved to San Antonio, TX, and then to Amarillo, TX to be closer to his family.

There’s nothing Hogan treasured more than his family, especially when time was spent on his plush, green front yard, in his red metal lawn chair. Much delight came from riding bikes with his grandchildren over the years, and later trading those wheels in for his greatly missed golf-cart, where countless memories were made with his neighborhood friends and family. There’s no doubt Hogan acquired exquisite collections he would proudly exhibit to those fortunate enough to see. If you were lucky enough to have a conversation with Hogan, you know that you would learn something new and fascinating, thanks to his admiration and vast knowledge of history. He was an avid music lover, and never went without it blaring in at least one room of their home. It’s clear his devotion to his family and friends created a strong foundation of wonder, light, and love to be shared on for a lifetime.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Glen and Helen Hickman, along with his special mother-figure, Ruth Hughes. Included is his grandchild Kalena, sister Diane, and his loving “fur-child” Sugar.

His spirit is carried on by his beloved wife of 55 years, Brenda Shoaf-Hickman, their two daughters, Tracy Sommers (Terrence) and Tina Hickman (Mike). He was an adventurous “Pop” to seven grandchildren, Daniel Sommers, Chris Sommers, Lauren Taylor (Dan), Darrian Sommers (Maribel), Natasha Marshall, Bodhi Marshall (Katrina), Kyira Hill (Drew). His 11 great-grandchildren, Martin, Sophia, Blake, Aggie, Ava, Sawyer, Waverly, Naomee, Nova, Malachi, and Felicity were prized and boasted to anyone near. He is also survived by his 6 younger siblings, two cherished “fur-children”, and many nieces, nephews, friends, family, and pets, too numerous to list but not forgotten.

Hogan was loved by all and had a profound impact on those around him. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

I had the pleasure of meeting Hogan 6 months ago. He was always the friendly face of the neighborhood I looked forward to saying hello to daily. We all enjoyed sitting with him to hear his stories. I didn’t always know if he was joking or telling the truth with his quick wit so would have to ask him, “did that really happen?” He would have that big smile on his face and a hilarious comeback that always made everyone laugh. He would always offer to help no matter what he had going on. You don’t find many people in this world like that anymore and was so grateful. Hogan was the kind of guy who would have given the shirt off his back. He talked nonstop about his family, and you knew how much love he had for them. He was so proud of his grandkids and told me they would take care of him one day.
It’s a great sadness that the conversations are over. I will remember him always with great love and smile at the stories we shared and the memories that were made. He will be forever missed.

I have many memories but one of my favorites was the immense pleasure I felt the first time Hogan took out his “yard of the week” sign and placed it in the ground right between our houses. Honestly, I knew I couldn’t touch a candle to the lush, perfect lawn Hogan was so proud of, but I also knew he meant it as a sincere gesture, and I was touched. I loved getting the invitations to patrol the neighborhood with he, Brenda and the dogs in the golf cart but most of all I loved the chats. Whether it was stopping to catch up while walking my dog or sitting with him & Brenda in the front yard on cooler evenings, I will miss him. He was one-of-a-kind!

We had known each other since our freshman year at FHS and then on to North Callaway where we graduated together in 1968. We stood by each other in our class pic with our caps and gowns . We were re-acquainted after many years thru Facebook and we decided to meet at the Fulton Street Fair. We exchanged phone numbers and talked every few weeks. He was lucky enough to to be able to come to our Class reunion two years ago which was wonderful that he and Brenda could come! I was honored that he also asked me to go to his sisters breakfast family gathering . Also that week he and I went to see Judy which was a friend of mine and his little girlfriend our freshman and sophmore years. He had also wanted me to come to Amarillo do he could show me the sights. His health took a turn for the worse and regrettably I never got to visit them. I wish I had been able to spend more time with them and meet his Texas family. He had told me so much about them.. I do cherish the time I had with and all the phone conversations. Rest in Peace, Hogan, I will miss you♥️
