James Michael Green, lovingly known as Mike, Doc, and Papa, passed away on February 12, 2026. He was born on January 27, 1947, in Commerce, Texas to James Green and Mary Ellen Green. At nine months old, Mike moved with his family to Kermit, Texas where he was raised.
Mike graduated from Kermit High School in 1965. During his high school years, he was actively involved in band, track, DeMolays, the Boy Scouts of America, and Methodist Youth Fellowship. He went on to attend West Texas State University (WTSU), where he earned both his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees.
Upon graduation, Mike began what would become a remarkable 32-year career in education. He was hired by Amarillo Independent School District as the athletic trainer and a math teacher at Tascosa High School, where he faithfully served for 22 years. He later continued his career at River Road High School for 10 years before retiring. Throughout his years in education, Mike impacted countless students and athletes.
In retirement, Mike devoted his time to the things he loved most. An avid golfer, he spent many hours on the course and eventually worked part-time at several local golf courses. He also remained active in the community as a volleyball referee for UIL and club volleyball, continuing his lifelong support of youth and athletics. One of Mike’s greatest joys was dressing up as Santa Claus for events and parties, bringing laughter and delight to children and families alike.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, James Green and Mary Ellen Green, and by niece Kahla Harris.
He is survived by his daughter, Monica Cossey and her husband Gregg; his son, Jimmy Cowper; his grandchildren, Brittany Cartrite and her husband Braiden, Katelyn Jacobs and her husband Jace, and Alyssa and Ashlyn Watson; and his great-grandchildren, Bailer, Bennett, Jaxtyn, Braidee Jo, Bragg, and Judd. He is also survived by his sisters, Karen Harris and Kathleen Green; his nephew, Chris Harris and his wife Brandie; his great-nieces, Makahla and Madison Harris, and his great-great-nephew, Jamie Harris.
Mike will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to his students, and his joyful spirit that touched all who knew him. Whether on the sidelines, in the classroom, on the golf course, or dressed in a Santa suit, he lived a life of service, kindness, and love. His legacy will continue in the many lives he influenced and in the family he cherished so deeply.
Funeral services will be held Monday March 2, 2026, 6:00pm at Hillside Christian Church-West Campus, 6100 S Soncy Road, Amarillo Texas.
All are encouraged to wear casual dress.

I enjoyed working with Mike at AHS. He was always kind, even tempered and conscientious. He had a meaningful impact at AHS as an assistant principal and always tried to what was best for the students and staff. My condolences to the family for your loss. He loved all of you.
Awe…really enjoyed reffing volleyball games with Doc!
Doc taped my ankles many times and had me ice down with those tongue depressor “ice pops” during my time at Tascosa from ’75-’77. Always had a smile on his face and always kind to me. Rest easy Doc!
I worked with”Doc” at the Craig. He always made me laugh. And he was the Best Santa ever. He took it seriously and really cared about people and young adults. Your laugh and your heart and your smiling face will be missed Doc.
Mike was a great guy to work with. He always made himself available for those who needed assistance. Mike was a calm, meticulous administrator. His positive nature influenced many people. He touched many lives and I will miss him,
