John Edward Smith Sr., age 78, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2026, following a brief illness. John was born on September 8, 1947, in Tucumcari, NM, to parents Ruben and Eileen Smith.
John graduated from Logan High School and attended college at Eastern New Mexico University, where he met the love of his life, Connie. John was drafted into the military and served in the Army until 196,9 when he was honorably discharged. John did many different things throughout his career; however, his great love was teaching.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Ruben and Eileen Smith of San Jon, NM, his son John Edward Smith Jr. of Wetherford, OK, and siblings Jude Smith of San Jon, NM, Patrick Smith of Albuquerque, NM, RJ Smith of Corrales, NM, David Smith of Tucumcari, NM, and Robert Smith of San Jon, NM.
Surviving John are his wife of 60 years, Connie Smith of Amarillo, TX, and sisters Mary Ann Dominguez (Ernest), and Noreen Hendrickson (Jack), both of Tucumcari, NM, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 10:00 am (Mountain time) at Aniston Cemetery with Pastor Rusty Kenyon of First Baptist Church of Tucumcari presiding.
