Judy Lorene Nelson

Judy Lorene Nelson, 71, of Amarillo, Texas departed this life on June 12, 2024. Judy was born on December 21, 1952, to Eugene and Cass Boyd in Boise City, Oklahoma.

She was no stranger to ranch work growing up and found joy in the beauty of country scenery her entire life.  Scenery in which was as unique as Judy herself, from her colorful collection of Rockies to her mounds of western jewelry, Judy always ensured she had a matching pair for every occasion.

Don’t be fooled, Judy was no prissy girl, from rodeoing when she was younger, to fishing trips with the kids and grandkids, she was not afraid of a little dirt. Judy was adventurous and loved seeing new places, often while traveling with her husband Kirk on his semi-truck.

She enjoyed giving her grandkids and great-nephews dollar bills so they could get them a coke, watching reruns of Andy Griffith, hanging out at the pool hall with her sister, and shopping at just about anywhere with “Dollar” in the name of the store, but those were just some of her pastimes.

The joy in Judy’s face at a good old hockey game said it all. It was one of her favorite pastimes with the family, and Judy sure could root with the best of them. She was fiery, and headstrong, never afraid to let you know what she thought, and never afraid to stand up for who and what she loved or believed in. She adored her family and was never afraid to let you know just how much.

Judy loved and was loved fiercely every day of her life and will be greatly missed, but carried on forever in the hearts of those who knew her.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Kirk Nelson and her parents, Eugene and Cass Boyd.

She is survived by her sons, Richard Herrian of Amarillo; Trey Bates, and his wife, Shanda of Amarillo; her bonus son, Tyler Valentine of Amarillo, and her four grandchildren, Tennessee Smith, Sierra Herrian, Eli Bates, Emma Bates.  She is also survived by her sister Carolyn Guzman of Amarillo; a brother, Jim Boyd, of Pampa, Texas; one niece, several nephews, and numerous bonus children.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Lighthouse Funeral Home, 3707 Wolflin Ave, Amarillo, Texas.

The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, between 6:00-8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Friends and family are welcome to join us after the services Wednesday at Trey and Shanda’s to celebrate together the life of Judy Nelson.

I was sorry to hear of Judy’s passing. I grew up with her while attending grade school at Wheeless. We lived north of Eugene & Cass about 6 miles. My prayers are with your family.
