Lanta Louise Brewer Craig, 86, died peacefully on December 1 in Canyon, Texas. Lanta was born to Grover T. and Violet Ensor Brewer on February 11, 1939, in Flat Creek, Alabama. She had two brothers who predeceased her: Joe Nick and Charles Dexter Brewer.
She was married to William Cheairs Craig (deceased) and later divorced. She is survived by her son, Dr. David W Craig (Stacy Clopton), and her daughter, Lanta E. Craig, both of Amarillo, Texas.
She attended college at Blue Mountain College and NE Mississippi Community College. In the 1970s, she earned her Bachelor’s in Education from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
Lanta was an elementary school teacher at San Mateo Elementary in Jacksonville, Florida, for many years. After her retirement, she returned to Myrtle, Mississippi, and then taught in Hickory Flat for several years.
Lanta loved music. She was an accomplished pianist and sang soprano with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra for years. She especially enjoyed singing Handel’s Messiah. She loved living at the Brewer family farm in Myrtle after her retirement. She was active in the choir at First Presbyterian Church in Tupelo and volunteered at the New Haven Center and the Union County Historical Museum. She enjoyed antiquing and entertaining old friends at the family farm in Myrtle.
