Luis Cortez, 78, of Amarillo, passed away August 31, 2022. He was born April 29, 1944, in Amarillo, to Valentin Cortez and Socorro (Gonzales) Cortez. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1210 SE 11th St., in Amarillo, with Father Gomez as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Llano Cemetery East.
A Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2022, at Lighthouse Chapel, 3707 Wolflin Ave., in Amarillo.
Luis married Maria Juanita Cortez on September 21, 1976, in Amarillo, Texas.
He attended Amarillo High School then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his Country from 1964 to 1966 on the USS Constellation. He then continued his education at Amarillo College and spent the rest of his life pursing his passion for learning. He worked at Amarillo Country Club for over 30 years. Luis loved learning about anything mechanical, welding, woodworking, construction, and always was willing to help anyone. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews and watching movies with them and seeing them grow up.
He was preceded in death by his parents Valentin and Socorro Cortez; by; his siblings Valentin G. Cortez, Jr., Manuel Cortez, Guadalupe Tinajero, Jesus G. Cortez, and Joe Cortez.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Maria Juanita Cortez; his children Christopher George Cortez and Maria Angelica Cortez; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; his siblings, Felipe Cortez and Ninfa, Amelia Hermosillo and husband Armando, and Ricardo Cortez and wife Carol.
Luis, was a Valued employee at Amarillo Country Club, and a great friend,
There never was a machine or mower he couldn’t fix.
He will be greatly missed
