Peggy Jeanne Wooten Fairchild, 72, of Amarillo went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 26, 2024, at Five Points Nursing & Rehab in Amarillo. Her mother and brother were at the bedside. Her Mother, Reba, was able to spend most days and many nights with Peggy during her 18-month illness.
Peggy was born May 21, 1952, in Amarillo to Horace E. (Gene) and Reba Wooten. She spent her childhood at 2001 Arthur Street, the home her Daddy spent three years and one week building. Her Wooten grandparents lived next door at 2005. At 2007, lived a great-grandmother and an aunt and uncle. Add in many visiting aunts and uncles and cousins and friends galore, it was a great upbringing!
Peggy was the third generation of her family to attend Glenwood Elementary School. Her grandmother, Birdie Johnson and her daddy, Gene Wooten, preceded her attendance there. She then went to James Bowie Junior High School. She graduated from Caprock High School a year early in 1969.
Peggy graduated from Northwest Texas Hospital School of Nursing in 1973, receiving her Registered Nurse degree. In 1972, she was first runner-up for Miss NWTH School of Nursing.
After several years working as an RN, Peggy chose to stay home with her son, Matthew. While at home, she made beautiful cakes, including wedding cakes for many appreciative customers.
When Matt started school at Coronado Elementary, Peggy became a volunteer at the school. After a few years, she made plans to return to WTAMU and apply the science credits she had earned toward a BSN, toward a Teaching Degree. She received her degree in 1986. Peggy had performed her student teaching at James Bowie Junior High. When she received her degree, Bowie had a position available for her. Peggy spent her 25-year teaching career at Bowie, teaching Sciences and touching the lives of many students that she loved.
She was preceded in death by her dad, Gene Wooten; grandparents, H.E. Wooten, Birdie Wooten, Essie Bruce and Clifford Scott; several uncles and aunts, cousins and many furry friends (cats).
Peggy is survived by her precious son, Matthew Charles Brandon (Jennifer) Fairchild of Sierra Vista, AZ, mother, Reba Wooten of Amarillo, brother, Doug (Janet) Wooten of Amarillo; sister, Teresa (Jonathan) Traves of Amarillo, and other family and friends.
Peggy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for almost fifty years.

I went to school with Peggy at caprock with her brother Doug graduating together. I worked with Peggy at the hospital while attending college. She was a good nurse who cared for her patients. I am sorry to here she has passed away.
Reba, sorry to hear about Peggy. I remember many times visiting you and Birdie at those homes on Arthur or at the Johnson family reunion. I send my prayers and many memories from years past.
I was a fellow Bowie student in the early 2000’s, and she was a wonderful teacher, I liked her very much and have thought of her everyday especially driving down arthur st and passing by her house, I have often thought of her and i still have the pen she got ordered for me with my name on it.
I had Mrs.Fairchild as my 8th grade science teacher at Bowie. She was an amazing teacher. She was the only reason I passed science that year. Because I hated science. But she was not gonna let me fail. Her words exactly. She will be missed. RIP
