Rebecca Susan Smith

Rebecca Susan Smith, 69, of Amarillo passed away on Saturday, May 27th. She was born on April 14, 1954, in Amarillo, Texas to Alton Dodds and Katherine Robinett. She graduated from Palo Duro High. She was a Human Resources Clerk for 23 years at the TDCJ Clements Unit. She was strong, independent and smart. Kind to everyone and never judged a book, or a person, by their cover. She was playfully ornery and no matter how bad something was she’d tell us, “It’ll be alright.” It would always make you feel better even if it wasn’t true. She was a special kind of woman, our Mom, and she will be missed. For the rest of our lives, we’ll never be able to drink a Dr Pepper and not think of her.

She was a ferocious reader of Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Michael Crichton but enjoyed all science fiction and paranormal stories. She always kept a crossword puzzle nearby and enjoyed family parties and watching animated movies with her grandkids. Mom grew up in 60’s and loved Rock ‘n Roll but she was especially fond of Elton John and the Beatles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alton and Katherine Dodds, and survived by her sisters Nancy Horner Pierce, Carolyn Ellis and husband Ron, her brother John Dodds and wife Jann, her children David Barnes and wife Kandi, Jedediah Smith and wife Dana, and Sarah Hall and husband Blane. Grandchildren Caavan Albert, Taylor Smith, Dawson Barnes, Kimberly Smith, Braylin Albert, Tracen Albert, and Michael Smith. One great grandchild and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you open your heart and mind, judge less and love more.

A memorial service for Rebecca will be held Saturday, July 8, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 555 E Hastings Ave, Amarillo, Texas 79108, with Pastor Beau officiating.
